Introducing Vienna Scribe

Vienna Scribe is a next generation transcription app. It delivers accurate transcripts to your phone in seconds.

It transforms your speech into clean, accurate text in seconds. It is available in the App Store today, and unlimited transcriptions cost only $99 a year.

We built Vienna Scribe because, though there are many transcription services, none met our own requirements of being reliable and private.

Accuracy

Vienna Scribe is much more accurate than competing transcription products. In our testing, Vienna Scribe had the lowest mean word error rate (WER) of the services we tested.

ServiceMean WER
Siri18.3%
Google Assistant Typing4.9%
Vienna Scribe (Modified Whisper)2.5%

Details on our testing setup and methodology are available here. Testing code is available on our GitHub.

Truth

A Revolutionary Age is an age of action; the present age is an age of advertisement, or an age of publicity: nothing happens, but there is instant publicity about it. A revolt in the present age is the most unthinkable act of all; such a display of strength would confuse the calculating cleverness of the times. Nevertheless, some political virtuoso might achieve something nearly as great. He would write some manifesto or other which calls for a General Assembly in order to decide on a revolution, and he would write it so carefully that even the Censor himself would pass on it; and at the General Assembly he would manage to bring it about that the audience believed that it had actually rebelled, and then everyone would placidly go home, after they had spent a very nice evening out. An enormous grounding in scholarship is alien to the youth of today, in fact, they would find it laughable. Nevertheless, some scientific virtuoso might achieve something even greater. He would draw up some prospectus outlining systematically some all embracing, all explaining system that he was about to write, and he would manage to achieve the feat of convincing the reader of the prospectus that he had in fact read the entire system. The Age of Encyclopedists is gone, when with great pains men wrote large Folios; now we have an age of intellectual tourists, small little encyclopedists, who, here and there, deal with all sciences and all existence. And a genuine religious rejection of the world, followed with constant self-denial, is equally unthinkable among the youth of our time.

Reliability

Reliable means speech-to-text accurate enough that you don’t have to proofread it. If you have to proofread it's not faster than typing.

Google, Apple, and Microsoft offer speech-to-text services for free as part of their mobile and desktop operating systems. However, most people do not use these services in their daily lives because the results are unreliable.

Using Siri or Google Assistant often takes longer than typing the same message.

These services make enough mistakes that close proofreading is required. Some mistakes look very close to correct and are easy to miss.

Vienna Scribe offers a generational leap in accuracy. It is great for quickly dictating an email, a Slack message, a text, etc. Often these transcripts have no errors.

Our audio engine is based on a modified version of Whisper, by OpenAI. It’s the most accurate speech to text model on industry standard benchmarks. Details

Privacy

Vienna Scribe is totally private. We could not access your recordings or transcripts if we wanted to.

  • Accounts are anonymous
  • All transcripts and audio files are stored on device
  • We do NOT store your recordings
  • We do NOT store your transcripts

We take privacy extremely seriously. We are users of Vienna Scribe ourselves and would not trust a service with confidential material unless we knew internal access was not just controlled, but architecturally impossible.

Many other apps store audio files and transcripts on their servers indefinitely. This can be convenient and helps those companies train more accurate models on your data, but we believe it is a massive privacy violation. It also makes their servers a honeypot for future data breaches.

How is this possible?

Our audio engine is computationally intensive and cannot be run on current generation mobile devices. When a user requests a transcript, their audio is sent securely to our servers where it is processed. The transcript is streamed back to their device. Once the full transcript has been received by the user's device, the audio file and transcript are permanently deleted from our servers.

Pricing

We don't like caps and we don't like minutes. We have one plan and it's unlimited.

Even with state-of-the-art accuracy, we provide far better value than competing services that charge by the minute or have a cap on the number of transcripts one can generate per month.

What's Next?

Our mission at Vienna Hypertext is to build tools for digital renaissance. We hope Vienna Scribe will allow many users to live simpler and more private digital lives.

We are currently working on a killer integration between Vienna Scribe and Vienna Hypertext. We'll have more to say about that soon.
